You might just download a torrent for Mountain Lion. OS X doesn't have any copy protection. You can create a VM from the dmg included with the installer application (Install OS X Mountain Lion.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg), so don't download any modified ISOs meant for PCs.

The hope of a ford must be given up therefore; no boat or raft wasprocurable, and indeed could hardly live in such a torrent, bridging wasout of the question, so nothing remained but to swim for it. The forking, broken and splinteredlimbs, however, projecting on all sides, caught in the bed of the rivernow that the stream was low, and this prevented the burro from beingswept into the middle of the current, and suddenly, to the surprise andde[Pg 136]light of the boy, a swift back eddy caught the animal and threw himup upon the shore.

Roger looked up, and from the heights above him there floated down avociferous and fluent torrent of language, which, even at that distance,sounded strange and barbarous to the boy's ears. Using hisfield-glasses, moreover, he could distinguish a figure leaning over aledge some distance above, and by the long cue he could see it was aChinaman. The sight gave him great encouragement, for he knew that theparty he was following had with it a Chinese cook, named Ti Sing, wellknown in that region, and one of the most valued cooks in the Survey.

The desert lies to the north, the inaccessible Canyon to the south, analkali waste to the westward, and the desolate cactus land to the east,but the Kaibab plateau, 8,000 feet above the sea, is a sylvan paradise.Yet there is no running water, and travel over it must be well withinreach of trails. Here alone, in this vast arid tract, it rainsfrequently, but the rains form no streams, for the whole plateau ispitted with cups or depressions ten to twenty feet across, into whichthe water runs, and through which by some underground passages itdisappears only to swell in some invisible manner the swollen torrent ofthe Colorado, 6,000 feet below.

It was the most fatiguing day Roger had yet spent on the Survey, noteven excepting the famous trip across the Grand Canyon, for in thelatter the pace had been his own, while in this he had to play an equalpart with exceptionally vigorous and seasoned men, coping with amountain torrent. The dusk was falling as, once more in boats, andpassing through a small gorge, the party reached the confluence of theJack and Cantwell Rivers. Although the distance traversed had been buttwenty-eight miles, and the party had been traveling with the current,so arduous[Pg 284] and rough had been the way that eleven hours had been spentin making the journey.

\"I shouldn't care to tackle it,\" said Gersup, \"but Harry says he cantake the boats through, but not loaded. They would have to go down lightand the loads portaged. There is a fair carry on that side, but it'sthrough small trees pretty close together, and the canoes would beawkward to take through. It's about a twelve-mile portage, too, as Ishould judge, before we can strike a place where the boats could land.\"

Just at the narrowest part, when it was difficult sometimes to avoid thepaddles striking the rock on the side, the torrent boiling through andboth men backing water, the canyon took a sharp turn to the right. Harrythrew her head round, but not far enough, for there, not fifteen feetaway from the angle of the bend, a black rock rose sheer from the water,with a spur sticking out, exactly like the spur of a fighting cock. Theboat could not clear, and though Roger got the bow by, the[Pg 293] currentcrushed the side of the canoe against the rock, and with a cry theIndian leaped for the spur.

The next day, however, was travel of the kind that he liked. Two smalltributaries of the Kanuti, mere mountain streams, flowed in and raisedthe water to a height where it was possible to shoot the rapids insteadof wading them, carrying the canoes. Ever since the canoe slide on theCantwell, Roger had felt quite proud of his powers as a canoeist, andthis pride was considerably heightened as he found how able he was tohandle the[Pg 345] boat on this new stream. It was different, too, for whilethe first set of rapids had been a torrent foaming between jaggedupstanding crags of rock, this was a swift river running over heaps ofboulders, and the Indian had to judge by the swirl of the water justwhat was below. 1e1e36bf2d
